Anessa is the brand Japan trusts with its summers, and this is its gentlest formula. The UV protection comes entirely from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with no chemical UV filters at all. It’s also free of fragrance, colourants and alcohol, which is a short list of the things sensitive skin most often objects to.

The texture is a light, moist gel rather than the chalky paste mineral sunscreens used to be. It spreads easily over face and body, and peony root, liquorice derivative and cherry blossom leaf extract keep skin feeling calm. Shiseido’s water-resistant technology means it doesn’t give up at the first sign of sweat, and it washes off with ordinary soap.

SPF35 is a sensible everyday level for school runs, errands and the walk across a car park in August.

How to USE

Apply evenly to face and body as the last step of your skincare in the morning, using about two finger-lengths for the face and neck. Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling off. Remove with your usual cleanser or soap.
