Pelican Soap For Back Medicated Soap
135g
Backs get forgotten. They’re awkward to reach, impossible to inspect properly, and most people’s body care stops at whatever the shower gel manages on the way past. Meanwhile the skin there produces roughly as much oil as the face, spends the day sealed under fabric at high temperature and humidity, and collects whatever your shampoo leaves behind.
Pelican Soap built an entire small brand around this one problem. For Back is a black charcoal-and-clay soap that clears congestion properly while leaving the skin’s moisture where it belongs, and it has become something of a quiet phenomenon in Japan.
Why You’ll Love It
- Charcoal, clay and papain. Medicinal charcoal with bentonite and kaolin clays draw out congestion, while papain enzyme loosens dead surface skin.
- Yuzu ceramide and collagen. Two moisturising ingredients that keep the wash from stripping, so skin stays balanced rather than tight.
- Isopropylmethylphenol and glycyrrhizinate. Two conditioning actives long established in Japanese formulas for blemish-prone skin.
- Six-free formula. No synthetic surfactants, parabens, silicones, UV absorbers, mineral oil or alcohol.
- Non-comedogenic tested. Though as Pelican note, that is not a guarantee for everyone.
- Herbal citrus scent. Bright and clean, and genuinely pleasant to stand in.
- Dense, long-lasting lather. The foam is the mechanism here, and it holds up even on oily skin.
Why Your Back Breaks Out
The skin across your back and shoulders produces a similar amount of sebum to your face. Unlike your face, it then spends the day under clothing, where heat and humidity build and there’s nowhere for anything to go. Dead skin blocks the follicle, the conditions underneath are ideal for bacteria, and the result arrives a few days later.
Add a hot climate, daily sunscreen on the shoulders, gym sessions and swimming, and the UAE is close to a worst-case environment for this.
The soap addresses the mechanical part of the problem: clearing the congestion and the dead skin that sits over it, without stripping the skin so thoroughly that it overcompensates.
The Lace on the Box
Worth mentioning, because it tells you who Pelican made this for.
When they were developing the product, the use case that kept surfacing was bridal. Brides booking back treatments before the wedding, suddenly conscious of a part of the body that is normally invisible and is about to be very visible indeed.
So the packaging carries a lace pattern taken from a wedding dress. It’s a small thing, and it explains the product rather neatly.
The brand was featured in Newsweek International in December 2025, which is an unusual place to find a bar of soap.
Who It’s For
- Breakouts across the back, shoulders and chest
- Anyone who has tried washing more thoroughly and found it made no difference
- Gym bags, swimming pools and the general business of sweating through a Gulf summer
- Weddings, open-backed dresses, and any occasion where you’d rather not think about it
- Anyone who wears sunscreen on their shoulders daily, which should be everyone here
- Oily skin that defeats most soaps
If Your Back Breaks Out
This is extremely common and almost nobody talks about it, which is why most people assume they’re the only one.
Three things that genuinely help, in order of how much difference they make:
Wash your hair first, then tie it up. Conditioner runs down your back and sits there. This single change fixes the problem for a surprising number of people.
Don’t scrub. Breakouts are not dirt, and scrubbing at them damages the skin and makes everything redder and angrier. Thick foam, leave it thirty seconds, rinse.
Change your pillowcase and your bedsheets more often than you do. Weekly at minimum. Same for anything you sleep in.
One honest note: if your back breakouts are deep, painful, or leaving marks, that’s worth seeing a doctor about rather than working through products. A soap can help with congestion; it can’t do everything.
