Shiseido Professional Adenovital Advanced Scalp Essence
The step the shampoo was preparing the scalp for.
Adenovital is built as a sequence rather than a shelf of products, and this is where it arrives. The shampoo clears and conditions the scalp; this essence is what goes onto it afterwards, applied directly to the skin rather than the hair, and massaged in.
The formula is built around adenosine, the ingredient the entire range takes its name from, in a light alcohol base designed to spread across the scalp and absorb quickly rather than sitting in the hair. Around it sits an unusually long list of botanicals, most of them fixtures of Japanese scalp care: sophora root, carrot, ashitaba, lychee, hops, perilla, apricot and ononis extract, alongside niacinamide and a panthenol derivative.
This is Shiseido Professional, the salon line, and it behaves like a salon product. Precise, slightly clinical, and designed to be used consistently rather than occasionally.
Why You’ll Love It
- Goes on the scalp, not the hair. A nozzle designed to part the hair and deliver product to the skin.
- Adenosine. Shiseido’s signature across the Adenovital range.
- Niacinamide and panthenol derivative. Two well-established conditioning ingredients for scalp comfort.
- Botanical complex. Sophora root, carrot, ashitaba, lychee, hops, perilla, apricot and ononis extracts.
- Light, fast-absorbing base. It disappears rather than sitting on the scalp, so hair is not left limp.
- Cooling finish. L-menthol, which is genuinely pleasant in this climate.
- Works wet or dry. Use on a towel-dried scalp after washing, or on dry hair at any point in the day.
- Salon line. Shiseido Professional rather than the consumer range.
How It’s Meant to Be Used
The massage is not optional decoration here. Shiseido treat it as part of the product, and the essence is formulated on the assumption that you will spend a minute working it in with your fingertips.
Apply the nozzle directly against the scalp, moving in sections so the product reaches skin rather than hair, then work it in with the pads of your fingers. Full method in the usage notes.
Within the Range
Shampoo clears the scalp and keeps its moisture, so it can receive what follows.
This essence is the treatment step, applied directly to the scalp.
Used alone, the essence is still a well-made scalp treatment. Used after the Adenovital shampoo, it is doing what it was designed to do, which is rather the point of buying a system.
Who It’s For

- Anyone already using the Adenovital shampoo
- Scalps that feel tight, dry or neglected
