Work the bar into a proper lather first, using a net or sponge if you have one. The foam is what reaches into the skin’s surface, and a thin lather does considerably less.

Spread the foam across the body and give a few extra seconds to the areas where sweat collects: underarms, the back of the neck, the chest, the back and the feet.

Let the lather sit for a moment rather than rinsing immediately. Twenty or thirty seconds is enough.

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and dry properly, particularly anywhere skin folds against skin.

Suitable for daily use. If your skin runs dry, follow with a body moisturiser while still damp.

Looking after the bar. Drain it well after use and let it dry out between showers. A bar left sitting in water softens and goes to nothing quickly.

What is kakishibu?

Kakishibu is fermented persimmon juice, used in Japan since the Edo period for waterproofing paper, dyeing cloth, preserving wood and keeping things fresh. The active component is persimmon tannin, which is naturally astringent, and it has been a staple of Japanese summer care for centuries.

How does a soap help with body odour?

Sweat itself is largely odourless. The smell develops when sweat meets sebum and dead skin on the surface. Clearing that surface properly is the part a deodorant cannot do, which is why washing with the right formula makes a noticeable difference in hot weather.

Where should I concentrate when washing?

The underarms, the back of the neck, the chest, the back and the feet. Let the lather sit for twenty or thirty seconds in those areas before rinsing rather than washing straight past them.

Can it be used every day?

Yes. If your skin tends towards dryness, follow with a body moisturiser while the skin is still damp.

Is it suitable for men?

Yes. Nothing about the formula or the orange ginger scent is specific to one gender.

What does it smell like?

Orange and ginger, built on a base of natural orange oil. Warm and slightly spicy rather than sharp or citrusy.

Can it be used on the face?

It is formulated as a body soap. It contains ethanol and charcoal, so if you want to try it on the face, go gently and follow with a moisturiser.

What is the charcoal for?

Medicinal charcoal works alongside bentonite clay as a cleansing aid, lifting excess sebum and dead skin from the surface.
