Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Acne Care Japanese Chamomile Face Foam
50g
Japan's most-bought cleanser, in the version made for skin that breaks out.
Perfect Whip has been a fixture of Japanese bathrooms for years, and the reason is the foam. A two-centimetre squeeze works up into a dense, almost solid lather that sits between your hands and your face, so the cleansing happens through contact rather than friction. Skin that is already irritated does not need to be rubbed at.
This is the Acne Care version, with Japanese chamomile. It carries dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, a liquorice-derived conditioning ingredient long used in Japanese formulas for unsettled skin, and the foam is built to lift away the sebum and congestion that settle into pores. Two forms of hyaluronic acid handle the part most blemish-focused cleansers forget, which is leaving skin comfortable rather than stripped.
At 50g, this is the travel size, and the sensible way to find out whether it suits you.
Why You'll Love It
- Genuinely dense foam. It holds its shape, which is what keeps your hands off your face.
- Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate. From liquorice root, and a long-standing fixture of Japanese formulas for skin that flares.
- Two hyaluronic acids. Sodium hyaluronate and the acetylated form, so skin does not feel tight afterwards.
- Silk proteins. Sericin and hydrolysed silk, a Senka signature.
- Allergy tested. Though as Shiseido note, that is not a guarantee for every user.
- Herbal floral scent. Clean and brief rather than perfumed.
- 50g travel size. Right for a weekend bag, a gym locker, or trying it before committing.
Why the Foam Matters
Most people cleanse badly, and almost always in the same way: not enough lather, too much hand on face, thirty seconds of hurry. On skin that is breaking out, that friction is the opposite of helpful.
A dense foam solves it mechanically. The lather cushions your fingers away from the skin and the surfactants do the cleansing, which is how it should work. You need water and about thirty seconds of whipping to get there, and it is worth the thirty seconds.
A small amount goes a surprisingly long way, which is why a 50g tube lasts longer than you would expect.
A Word on How It Cleanses
This is a thorough cleanser, and some people find it slightly drying with twice-daily use. Several reviewers have arrived at the same solution: use it in the evening, when you actually want the deeper clean, and something gentler in the morning.
If your skin runs dry, or you spend most of the day in air conditioning, start with evening use only and see how you get on. Follow with a hydrating step while the skin is still damp.
Who It's For
- Adult breakouts, the kind that arrive around the jaw and chin and ignore teenage rules
- Oily and congested skin that finds most blemish cleansers leave it tight
- Anyone who scrubs at their face and knows they should not
- Travel, gym bags, and testing a cleanser before buying a full size
Learning to Lather
This takes thirty seconds longer than you want it to, and it is worth it.
Wet hands first, properly wet. Two centimetres of product. Then keep adding small amounts of water and working it between your palms until it goes from slippery to thick. You will know when it happens, because the foam stops sliding and starts holding its shape.
Then wash with the foam, not your fingers. Your hands should barely touch your face. Rinse with lukewarm water, never hot.
If your skin feels tight and squeaky afterwards, the water was too hot or you rinsed too long. Clean skin should feel comfortable, not stripped. And if it still feels tight, switch to using this at night only.
