Shiseido Professional Adenovital Shampoo
The first step in the Adenovital system, and the one that makes the rest of it work.
Shiseido Professional built Adenovital around a single observation: most scalp treatments fail not because the actives are weak, but because they never reach anything. A scalp coated in product residue, sebum and hard-water minerals is a scalp that repels whatever you put on it afterwards.
This shampoo exists to solve that. It cleanses thoroughly enough to clear the scalp properly, while leaving behind the moisture that harsher shampoos strip out. The result is a scalp in good condition and genuinely receptive to the Scalp Essence V that follows.
Used on its own, it’s a well-made shampoo for thinning or flat-looking hair. Used as intended, it’s the step that decides whether the rest of the range does anything.
Why You’ll Love It
- Cleanses without stripping. Thorough on residue, gentle on the scalp’s own moisture.
- Prepares the scalp. The whole point of the formula is making what comes next absorb properly.
- Ononis extract. A repairing ingredient that works on the cuticle, so hair holds up better to daily wear.
- AG Complex II. A moisturising compound of ashitaba, lingzhi and Japanese pepper extracts.
- Adenosine. Shiseido’s signature ingredient across the Adenovital range.
- Glycyrrhizinate and menthol. Conditioning and a light cooling finish, which is pleasant in a hot climate.
- Fruity green scent. Bright and clean, with a herbal edge rather than anything sweet.
- Salon-grade. This is Shiseido Professional, the line sold through salons rather than drugstores.
What’s Actually in It
Ononis extract, the repairing ingredient, works on the hair cuticle so hair is better able to withstand heat, brushing and the general attrition of the day.
AG Complex II is Shiseido’s own moisturising compound, built from ashitaba, lingzhi mushroom and Japanese pepper extracts. Its job is scalp condition rather than hair.
Adenosine is the ingredient the range is named for, and appears here alongside glycyrrhizinate, perilla extract, thiotaurine and vitamin E acetate.
Menthol gives the wash a light cooling finish, which is not an accident in a product designed to be massaged into the scalp for a minute or two.
The Scalp Massage
Shiseido give unusually specific instructions with this shampoo, and they’re worth following. The massage is treated as part of the product rather than a nice extra, and the full method is in the usage section.
Short version: work in circles, lift upward rather than scrubbing down, and spend extra time on the crown, where the scalp is tightest and tends to get the least attention.
Who It’s For
- Hair that looks flatter or finer than it used to
- Anyone using the Adenovital Scalp Essence, where this is the intended first step
- Scalps that feel tight or dry after washing
- Anyone whose scalp care currently consists of a shampoo chosen for the bottle
- Hard water areas, where mineral residue builds up quickly on the scalp
